SEAUS 2.0 is an international seminar focusing on urbanism, landscapes, and cultures in Southeast Asia. Held from 11-14 June 2025 in the vibrant city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, this event aims to bring together scholars, researchers, and professionals to explore the ongoing transitions in the region’s urban and rural landscapes. Join us as we discuss key issues impacting Southeast Asia's urban development, cultural heritage, and environmental sustainability.
SEAUS 2.0 (Southeast Asian Urbanisms Seminar) 2.0 will have 2.5 days of the seminar (11-13 June 2025) and optional local tours (14 June 2025). The seminar will focus on Cultures in Transition: Urbanism and Landscapes in Southeast Asia. As witnessed throughout the region, continued urbanization is not only leaving in its wake a transformed physical environment, but also age-old cultures are metamorphosed. SEAUS 2.0 seeks to have informed debate and discussion on a number of sub-themes amongst both young researchers (PhD candidates) and more mature scholars as well as with practitioners.
The event offers three programmes that take place in three-four consecutive days:
Main Conference (in person only)
The conference invites early career researchers, senior researchers, academia, planners, professionals, and scholars from all relevant disciplines (e.g., architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and planning, city planning, history, geography, and anthropology) to submit and present their research papers. Other types of participants (non-presenters) are more than welcome to attend the conference. Papers that have accommodated the Scientific Committee or the reviewers’ comments will be published via a conference proceeding with ISSN/ISBN.
Doctoral workshop (in person only)
The Doctoral Workshop at SEAUS invites doctoral students with dissertation research focused on urbanism and landscapes in Southeast Asia in all relevant disciplines, including but not limited to architecture, planning, urban design, landscape architecture, history, geography and other social sciences. The full-day and in-person workshop will be held during the SEAUS 2.0 conference from 11-13 June 2025, and participants are encouraged to attend all other events at the conference.
The workshop is mainly designed for doctoral students at two stages: (1) those who are actively developing a dissertation or thesis proposal, or who have a proposal that would benefit from feedback and refinement; (2) those who are in the early stages of writing their research findings, particularly the initial framing and introductory chapters. To gain the most from the workshop, participants should be at a stage in their proposal or dissertation development where they can make substantial changes based on the feedback provided. However, we welcome audience outside doctoral students to participate in certain sessions, such as the keynote speech during the workshop date.
Abstracts for paper presentations are invited for the following sub-themes :
